Description
A first-time user experience (FTUE or FTUX) takes place when a prospective or new user arrives in the Sage ecosystem. It's a critical moment, or collection of moments, where we welcome the user into Sage and reassure them that they’re in the right place. The best way to do this is with a Sage iconic moment.
FTU examples
The FTUE depends on where the user first encounters Sage and what they are trying to do. Examples of FTUEs include the following.
- Online advertising
- Website or forum.
- Creating an account.
- Logging into a product for the first time.
- Using a product for the first time.
- Using a product feature for the first time.
- In-product discovery
- Product tour
- Product video
- Contextual onboarding
Design system
Limit custom components and patterns in an FTUE or when migrating existing users to another Sage app.
- Use digital components for anything that is not fully product related. This includes product onboarding from a website. For example, when coming from sage.com to a new product, the product overview tour uses the digital look and feel. But a more detailed tour of product features uses the product look and feel.
- Use an empty state or what's new carousel for anything that is fully product related. This includes first-time use of a feature, online help, and in-product discovery.
Sage iconic moments
Use any of the following to create a big impact in an FTUE.
- Celebration of small wins or achievements.
- Micro-interactions and animations to show users how to interact with a website or product.
- Illustrations
- Animated loaders
- Gamification badges awarded to the user when they complete tasks.
Best practices
- Make sure the FTUE aligns with brand guidelines.
- Prioritize UX content when creating the FTUE and align it with brand tone of voice.
- Keep the FTUE focused on user needs.
- Use an empty state to keep the FTUE simple.
- Use a persona or role approach.
- Highlight Sage values rather than product features.
- Use progressive discovery to avoid overwhelming users.
- Let users skip the FTUE and easily return to it later.
- Avoid tooltips where possible because they are not accessible.
